Personality:
Isaac, in his too tall, too lanky frame, was an awkward teenager. He had a time in his life around 15 years old when everything he saw or felt was gray. He was sick of his parents fighting, sick of the teacher’s snooty looks, and sick of his life in general. In an arrogant mood, he ran away to the city for a solid ten months. He joined a gang, impregnated and left his girlfriend, got his ass handed to him in a number of fights, stole, drank, and did any number of drugs, whether knowingly or not. Lucky for him, this time spent on the street allowed him to discover his gift, using it defensively in squabbles. Unfortunately, Isaac’s little joyride ended when he was caught in a knife fight with the wrong guy. Drained from using his gift, he was found bleeding and unconscious in a sewage culvert. He was taken home and quickly got his act together. Most people at school never knew about what he’d done while he was away so it was easy for Isaac to simply slip into the background.
This turn around was kick-started by his father’s decision to leave. It forced him into a state of growing up too soon and becoming the man of the family at 16. With their mother practically non-existent in their life, Isaac was raised his three younger siblings almost single-handedly. His life became potty-training little Sasha, taking 15-year old Seth to the emergency room after a game, and helping Seth’s twin Jasper out of another fight. Isaac was protective, careful, and a little controlling but it was what his family needed. After having pulled this 180, his friendships fell apart and Isaac found he was content to spend his time quietly listening to music on the edge of everyone’s peripheral. He was ignored and eventually he forgot about his gift.
All of this changed when the plague hit. Isaac protected his family, they ran from the berserkers as the epidemic grew, and for a time they survived. They discovered their gifts and tried to understand them, but in a misfortunate turn of events, Seth, Jasper, and three-year-old Sasha were lost. Isaac was crushed, and for a long time, he wandered the land in fits of empty depression and rage. He picked up the use of a raggedy blade and slowly, made his way back to sanity. Once the blind rage passed, he slowly rediscovered his old sense of humor and joy, which he lost when his father left. He would find himself laughing at the coincidence of a hospital overrun by berserkers or t he like. Though this humor had a way of scaring him sometimes, he enjoyed it. Finally, he became used to the desolation and loss. Now, he’s the same overprotective boy he once was, but he’s become gruff. Isaac takes what he needs and survives on his own, keeping with him a guitar and an old picture as a reminder of what he once was.
History:
Before:
“Isaac!”
He sighed, a smile playing on his lips, “Sasha,” he drew out the name, “I thought I tucked you in.”
pPat, pat, patpatpat!
Her face appeared in the doorway to the family room, large brown eyes, filled with mischief. Seth chuckled from the sofa, shooting a glance at his older brother.
“Stowwytime?” She mumbled, knowing full well how to be adorable. Isaac laughed, pulling himself up from the table where Jasper held an ice pack to her cheek. He checked it quickly before turning to walk Sasha to her room.
“Alright, Squirt, what story are ya lookin’ for?” he asked as he lifted her into bed for the third time. She tipped her head from side to side before leaning forward and touching one of the long scars on his bare arm.
“Owwy,” she said with almost a question-like quality.
“Mmhmm.” It was a relic from an old fight, and for a moment his mind was lost to memory until her soft voice pulled him back.
“What happened?”
“Weeeell,” he thought for a moment. “Do you remember that big, bad monster in your closet that jumped out and scared you last week?” Sasha nodded quickly, worry in her gaze. “Well, the very next day, I went in there and told him he had to leave. He started to cry and cry and I felt really bad for him. So you know what I did? I helped him move into Seth’s room!” She let out a shrill giggle. They laughed for a minute before Isaac continued his story, tucking her back into bed as he spoke and giving her a kiss on the forehead.
“Goodnight, princess,” he said, flicking off the lights and slipping out the door.
During:
“Goddamn it, Seth, just forget the bag, okay? We don’t have time for this!” Isaac shouted over his shoulder, buckling Sasha swiftly into the shabby old car.
“Isaac, they’re coming!” Jasper yelled from the passenger seat.
“Seth, get the hell over here!” Isaac slid into the drivers seat, turning the engine over a few times as the berserkers advanced, “c’mon, come on!” The car roared to life and he kicked it in reverse, peeling out of the driveway and swerving around abandoned cars. The infection was hitting hard since it reached their town. Their mother had caught the disease quickly, like the neighbors, yet strangely, Isaac and his siblings seemed unaffected. All he knew for sure was that this wasn’t going to turn out well. They needed to leave and find shelter, somewhere.
“Shit!” Seth screamed as a berserker threw itself into the car door. Isaac swerved, throwing it into the divider in the road.
“Oh my god, Isaac that was Mr. Davison!” Jasper exclaimed.
“Jasper, please, just keep that kind of shit to yourself,” Isaac said, taking her hand in a failed attempt to comfort.
After:
“They’re gonna lock us in the bunker, we have to get to the entrance,” Isaac huffed, holding Sasha close to his chest as he ran, the twins at his side. They reached the doors with only a two-foot gap remaining as they slowly lowered. Seth gripped Jasper’s shoulder and shoved her under. She collapsed to the floor, exhausted from using the majority of her energy for her gift. She shot the rest of her energy at the berserkers spewing from the bunker. They fell in garbled piles across the entryway as Isaac and Seth rolled under the opening as the door shut with finality. Seth coughed and slowly made his way through the antechamber into the open air outside, keeping watch for berserkers as Sasha pushed her energy into Jasper, effectively healing her.
“Jazz, are you alright?” Isaac asked, looking over her exposed flesh for any bites.
“I’m good, Isaac, really. I just pushed a little too hard I guess. I’ll be alright.” He smiled, taking her hand in his.
“Alright, Seth, we’re gonna need a vehicle again. You got eyes for us?” Seth nodded in response and Isaac began to go about planning.
WARNING. WARNING. OUTBREAK DETECTED, came a computerized voice over the loudspeaker. WARNING. OUTBREAK TO BE NEUTRALIZED. PREPARE FOR ISOLATION.
“What?” Isaac murmured, face locked in confusion as steel slabs crunched down over the exit to the building.
“ISAAC!” Seth screamed from behind one wall. A bloodcurdling, inhuman screech came from the other as the power shut off. Fingers slid under the door into the bunker. Sasha clung to Isaac. He pulled Jasper into the corner of the antechamber and set Sasha in her lap.
“Close your eyes,” He whispered to them, kissing them in turn on the forehead. “I love you.” The berserkers came slinking in through the door, death and a sick humor in their eyes. Isaac shuddered, reaching out one hand, preparing to drain the last of his energy on a shield. They charged. The girls screamed. His energy flowed to his fingertips, pain shooting through his arm as he had already depleted most of his supply. It wouldn’t last long. Isaac’s vision tunneled and colors flashed in his peripherals. As he slowly slipped into unconsciousness, he felt a warm energy flowing over his form, replacing it.
With a yell, Isaac awoke, 19 years old, alone, and on the outskirts of the big city. The nightmare shook him every time. The exact memory of his failure to protect the ones he loved shot down his spine like ice. Seth had reached through the wall with his energy, basically teleporting Isaac into Seth’s place and vice versa. Isaac had survived, barely, in Seth’s place outside of the steel walls. He had laid out beside that wall, half-conscious, listening to his family being ripped apart.
Isaac forced the memory away and with a groan, he pushed himself off of the tired old mattress. He rolled his shoulder, making his way to the kitchen and grabbing the treasured remains of ground coffee he’d found in the little house. Slipping his knife in its holder, and a green t-shirt over his frame, Isaac made is way out into the suburb, coffee in hand, old guitar on his back.
