Last year, around fall.
The waves pushed themselves onto the sand, the chilled wind propelling them onto the shore. The beach was rather dirty, because the past nine years nobody had even bothered to touch a single thing that found it's way onto it. The occasional dead body lay in a water-logged heap, their skin rotting and nearly unrecognizable as a person. The waves lapped at their bodies reluctantly, as though the waves were trying to push them from it's reach.
A girl, around 24, sat in the sand, staring at the sun that was beginning to set. Her knees were pulled up to her chin, her arms wrapped around them. Her bright green eyes watched carefully, like she couldn't lose a moment of this beautiful sight. She ignored the death around her, only trying to focus on the hope of a magnificent sunset. Her combat boots lay beside her, her toes dug deep into the sand, even though it was rather cold, it was comforting. The beach was like her home now, like it was the only place where she would be welcomed with open arms, and without Berserkers trying to come after her at every moment.
The girl sighed, a gust of wind throwing a lock of her hair into her face. She pushed it back behind her ear, then rubbed her hands on her jeans, trying to warm them up a bit. She wore a decent amount of clothing; a pair of dark skinny jeans, a long sleeved gray shirt, and a skimpy red sweater. The sweater did nothing to keep her warm, but it was hard to find a good coat now-a-days. "And there I go," the girl muttered, watching as the sun's bottom just touched the surface of the water, sending beautiful colors aflame in the sky. "That's Apollo, the one who carries the sun across the sky each day. The one who gave the gift of fire to all of mankind" Apollo sighed, talking to herself, remembering her mother's words. Apollo could never think of herself as a gift to mankind, the only thing she could be considered was a monster, along with her whole family. She hated herself.

Looking out to the sea watching the water rush back and forth into the sand. The water didn't look the cleanest but it was the only water you could find unless you were lucky and the house waters were still running. The ocean had garbage that would come to shore and then you could even see body once in a while but half the time what ever was in the water would have found it a snack and then left the rest to float away. Looking out into the sky where the sun was about to probably make the most beautiful sun set that one would see not so often from having to keep moving or hiding
He stood their with a bottle in his hand walking over to the ocean. He dipped his head in real quick to get it wet. Because it was cold he tried his best to hurry it up. He then put in the hair shampoo he had found in his hair real quick then dipped it back in to the water. Once the shampoo was all out of his hair he grabbed the shirt he had in his hand and rubbed it over his short brown hair. Once his hair was dry he looked around not sure what he should really be doing.
Colton who was 21 just about to become 22 decide he wanted to walk along the shore. He might be able to find something in need and if not at least he could watch the sunset and have a nice relaxing walk. He took his time not wanting to rush plus their was no reason for him too it wasn't like he need to be some where. Colton would stop every now and then to pick up a rock and skip it across the water. Colton didn't pay much attention to the thing behind him that when he walked for about 20 minute and stop to skip another rock he just then noticed at girl sitting in the sand. She looked lonely and upset about something, he walked a little closer to where they were probably 5 foot steps away.

Apollo's eyes snapped up from the sunset to look at the person in front of her. Her muscles tensed, and her body shifted, ready to attack if this boy was a human, looking for trouble. But then again the boy probably couldn't tell if she was gifted or not. She relaxed slightly, knowing if the boy really tried to attack she could just dissolve into sand, and with this beach around her, he would never be able to find her. But if she did dissolve into sand, she would have to leave her clothes behind, and Apollo doubted she would find any other clothes just lying around as warm as the ones she had on now. And she didn't want to go on that search again, completely naked.
"Hello" she smiled softly, dropping her legs from her chin, then she put her arms behind her, and leaned back. "Do you need something?" Apollo questioned, looking the boy over. He looked like he just took a dip in the ocean, his hair looked still slightly damp.

Colton looked at her, she went from being to relax from being stiff. Maybe coming up to a random person wasn't the best idea, especially because he didn't know if she was a human or not. If she was human Colton could probably pull of telling her he was human because by the looks of it he didn't look like he had anything wrong with him. Colton took in a deep breath and the sat down he was a little a ways from her but could easy shift one position and be right next to her.
Colton smiled. "Hello" He said nicely looking out to the water then back at her. "Um well you looked a little upset so I though maybe I could come and talk to you." Colton said with a grin not sure if she would tell him to leave. "You don't see people that often now a days so it does get kinda lonely being by yourself in all." Colton exclaimed shrugging his shoulders.

Apollo nodded "yes, it does get quite lonely around here" she agreed, her green eyes watching the sunset now. Her toes buried themselves in the sand, and then they seemed to just disappear. Which in fact, they did. She let her concentration in keeping her body together go slightly, her feet dissolving into piles of sand. She hoped he wasn't watching her feet, because then he would question whether she was human or not, and there was no way to determine what this boy was, so it would be a risk.
Her fingers rubbed against the sand, keeping their form but the pads of her fingers became sandy in texture. The sand was still slightly cold against her skin, but the sand was still welcoming to her, like a second home. She missed her family, Athena, Magnus, and her father Latimer. But she knew her uncle and father were dead, but she wasn't sure about her little sister. She hoped to see her again one day, but she didn't search for her.

Colton grin looking back out to the sun set, he wasn't sure what to say or even if he need to say something. Just having a person next to him could be on the accompany he need ever if they weren't saying anything. Colton leaned back a bit having his back arm support him, he hand dug deep into the sand which felt nice. He looked over at her wonder what she was thinking about most likely family everyone though of their family and how much they missed them. Colton on the other could care less about his family he hadn't seen them in so many years that they could have died before the whole plague hit.
"I'm Colton, Colton Mcleod" Colton said with a smile looking at her. Next step was to find out if she was a gifted of not. Really it didn't matter to him if they were gifted or not Colton still would try to be nice unless they ended up trying to kill him of course. Colton tried to study her with out it being noticeable but it was a little hard, he gave up on it and looked down into the sand. He notice her feet but she had not feet they were just gone out of nowhere. Colton decide to just wing it and tell her he was a gifted know she was too or she just lost her feet. "I'm not human by the way." Colton exclaimed looking down to the sand and then one eye looked up at her.

Apollo nodded, "I'm Apollo," she spoke, not giving her last name. That was dangerous territory when her full name was given. Her eyes narrowed when he said he wasn't human, her feet snapping back to their human shape. She wasn't about to tell him what she was until he revealed completely what he was. "What are you then?" She questioned, sitting up a little straighter.
Apollo could easily manipulate the sand around her into a protective wall, or shift her hand into a rock like substance. Maybe even materialize a rock staff from the sand. Anything was possible with this amount of sand around her. So she wasn't very worried.

Colton looked at her weird when she didn't say her last name. He didn't want to go into it just because they just met and if she didn't want to talk about it could make things a mood killer. When she asked what he was Colton thought for a moment. "Well I guess you can call me a gifted." Colton said looking out to the sea it was clam right now and the waves were slowly coming in and out. "I really don't care about if a person is human or not, it not like it was a gifted choice to become one." Colton said with a smirk.
"I really don't care I guess I do like being a gifted just for the power I get maybe no the thing I turn into though." He said then he fell back into the sand. "So your a gifted if I may ask." Colton looked up at her and had a smirk on his face. It felt nice to have someone to talk to for the first time in a while. If he did get anyone to talk to him if would usally be someone yelling at him before they wanted to fight.

Apollo cringed "I hate being gifted" she muttered, looking down at the sand. "I think my sister is gifted also..." She stated, remembering Athena. Athena could lose her cool at the drop of a hat, and when she was angry her eyes would turn black, and Athena became a completely different person in every way. Athena wouldn't hesitate to smash someone's face into the ground, or throw a table across the room. Apollo had to calm Athena down many times. Her sister was never the type to work out, so when she could pick up a desk with no problem, Apollo knew something was up. "Have you met a girl named Athena? She looks like me" she shrugged, wondering if he had run into her at any point. Knowing her sister was alive would definitely boost her will to go on.

Colton looked up at her, "Really is their a reason for that or you just rather be human again." He asked still looking toward the sky. He though for a moment what it would be like to be a human again, he really didn't care what he was the one thing he would have change was all of the deaths. So many people died, kids had the hardest time trying to leave through it just because they weren't as strong as teen had been or adults.
Colton thought for a moment of all the people he had met but none with that name. "No I'm sorry I haven't but if we head are seperate way ill remeber that name and tell her I met you." Colton said trying to make her feel better, he want to say more but he didn't know what to say or do. "I'm sure you will find her if she is gifted she is probably more likely to be alive then if she was human." He said looking back at the sun set the color were just beautiful, there had to be at least 4 different color out their right now. "It sure is beautiful." He said smiling.

Apollo sighed, remembering life before the Plague, and before she developed these freak abilities. "I just wish life was simpler, without all of this death, these gifteds, and the hate everywhere. If all of this didn't happen, I could probably be engaged or married right now." She sighed, remembering the one boy she had a crush on in her last year of High School before the Plague hit. She didn't remember his name, but his face still lingered in her mind's eye. Which was rather remarkable, since it was about nine years everything started happening.
"And thank you" she smiled at his reply to tell Athena, if he ever ran into her, that Apollo was alive.

Colton looked down toward the ground, he licked the bottom of his lip real quick trying to make it less dry. "Well I don't really mid the gift just because I have gotten use to it. I don't see why so many people have to fight the humans should understand that it not like we wanted to become what we are now." Colton exclaimed, "I think it more of a way for them to blame someone for everything that happens" He said with a small smirk with faded away. Colton wasn't sure what his love life would be like right now and he was positive it would have been that great. He would probably have a kid and him and the girl would fight about who get him or her. "Love it a little over rated now a days with everyone trying to kill one another". Colton said with a small chuckle. "So what brings you to the beach." He asked know that it wasn't much and people stayed away from it unless they had some reason.

Apollo laughed, "yes, everyone trying to kill eachother". She closed her eyes for a moment, and turned her face up to the sky. She thought for a moment wondering what to say. Why was she at the beach? She was starving, and really needed some sleep, but she came here anyways. "Just for comfort, I guess" she stated, shrugging slightly. She remembered when her family, Athena and their father, and Magnus, would all go to this same beach together, and watch the sunset. Apollo also remembered the story of the God Apollo that her mother told her every time they watched the sun set. But her parents divorced a long time ago, and her mother never did speak to Athena.

Colton looked at her and nodded his head. "That makes sense wouldn't want to be some where that would make you feel unhappy." Colton looked at the ground as he spoke. He picked up some sand with one of his hand and then let the sand make it way through the cracks between his finger. Colton moved of closer to Apollo but didn't look at her. He ran his fingers through his hair which was still a little wet but not bad. "What was it like for you before all this happened." He asked looking at the sun while it disappear, and it became colder out.

Apollo half smiled "I was head cheerleader for my sophomore class, and number one in our class ranks. I wanted to be a mechanic. I knew everyone, everyone knew me" she laughed, remembering all of her old dreams. It was such a long time ago, but she remembered it like it was yesterday. "I'm not sure I can even do a back flip anymore honestly. I haven't tried in years" she stated, wondering if her 24 year old body could still live up to her 15 year old self. "What about you?" She asked, turning to look at Colton. She noticed that he had inched closer when she wasn't looking, but she wasn't about to say anything. Apollo didn't need it to be awkward between them.
